Women who will live, and leave a legacy of righteousness in Christ

Purpose

For women to embrace and celebrate their worth by showing kindness and offering godly wisdom. For women to be empowered to live from faith, cultivating a life of abundance and fulfillment in Christ.

The Rebecca A. Dishmon Missionary Society

The Rebecca A. Dishmon Missionary Society of Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Joliet, Illinois, was named for Mrs. Rebecca A. Dishmon, one of the founders of the church. It is not certain, however, that present-day members of the society believe that the society was started by the granddaughter of Mrs. Dishmon, Mrs. Thalia Blackshire. Since its inception, many talented women of Brown Chapel have led the society. Amongst these are Mrs. Adlean Knight and Mrs. Bertha Thompson.

It is also believed that the vitality of Mrs. Patricia Leak sparked the society in later years. Members recall meeting and using the "Thank Bible" while working with Mrs. Leak. Another working warrior was the late Ferol Warick.

Throughout the years, the Society has stressed to serve. Such was the intent when, as a project, the Blood Pressure Unit was established. This unit was headed by Sister Helen McKenzie in 1980 and still is functioning today under the guidance of Sister McKenzie.

The society has also been blessed to have within its midst women who have shared their talents across the conference. Such is Sister Bertha Thompson, who in 1997 wrote the words for the connectional song, "God's New People for the New Age."

With a commitment to the young, Mrs. Betty Mahone has represented the society through her commitment to the South Area as YPD director and is presently serving on the conference branch level.

The society continues its commitment to service through its works in the community with nursing homes and shelters, within the schools, and above all, within its own church body. “To God be the glory" for all that he has allowed the Rebecca A. Dishmon Missionary Society to do.
